About the Foundation
More than 50 years of standing beside our elders.
Mission
Complementary resources for compassionate, personalized care.
The Montreal Chinese Hospital Foundation is committed to advancing high-quality, culturally sensitive healthcare for Montreal’s Chinese community, particularly seniors, and the broader population.
Through sustained fundraising, community engagement and strategic partnerships, the Foundation provides complementary resources that enable the Hospital to deliver compassionate, personalized care to every patient.
History
A hospital built, and rebuilt, by its community.
1918
During the influenza epidemic, with the support of Mother Marie du Saint-Esprit and the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, the first shelter opens on Clark Street to care for Chinese community members.
1920
The community acquires a former synagogue at 112 de la Gauchetière Street West and operates the hospital there for 45 years, relying on donations.
1965
Under the leadership of Dr. David T.W. Lin, a new 65-bed hospital opens at 7500 Saint-Denis Street.
1971
Under provincial legislation (Bill 65), the hospital becomes public and is restructured into three entities, including the Montreal Chinese Hospital Foundation, dedicated to fundraising.
1980s
The hospital shifts to long-term care. With the Foundation’s pledged support, the Sung Pai Pavilion is added.
1999
A $2.6 million capital campaign brings the hospital home to Chinatown, at 189 Viger Avenue East.
